So it’s not exactly what you think – but made you look right? And I will get to the sexy point in a minute, but first let me say thanks for clicking the link to today’s blog. For more than 2-1/2 years now this blog has been a constant in my life and today this life I am building reaches Half Time – age 50.
It’s called Half Time because I’m living to 100-years-of-age. That’s the vision, that’s the mission, that’s the goal. The only thing that stands in my way is life, the same life I am constructing is the one that can be taken away in a heartbeat. I know this to be true – I’ve seen it happen – but I also know if I focus in on that heart – and sharing it with other people – I’ve got a great shot at going all the way and making this journey count for something. The Second Half is to be significant. This blog, the writing I do, the speaking I do, the mentoring I do, how I work in service to others including the other vocation I have with USHEALTH Advisors and the message of HOPE – Helping Other People Everyday – are all part of that significance.
And of course it goes without saying there is the foundation of my significance – my family, my wife Debbie, our daughters Sophie and Emily and even our dog Ollie – the other part of that significance is to be the husband and father they need me to be. To be there to love, nurture and provide. To be there for friends as well, to do what you can, for whom you can, whenever you can.
So what about sexy? That too! So get this – I’m about to transcribe the words (and eventually provide you a link to a video) from actor Ashton Kutcher. Yup, Ashton Kutcher.
What can I tell you? What he says makes complete sense and validates all I am trying to achieve, not only these past few years toward the end of my First Half, but here at Half Time as I enter the Second Half. Ashton Kutcher said he has defined what it means to be sexy:
“The sexiest thing in the world to someone else is being smart, being thoughtful and being generous — everything else is crap, I promise you. It’s just crap that people try to sell to you to make you feel like less. So don’t buy it, be smart, be thoughtful and be generous.” That is sexy.
Kutcher also said he learned a lot about life as he was making the movie of Steve Jobs life, words spoken by the man himself – which are at the essence of what I too believe is at the core of this Second Half:
“When you grow up you tend to get told that the world is the way that it is. And that your life is to live your life inside the world. To try not to get into too much trouble, and maybe get an education, get a job and make some money and have a family. But life can be a lot broader then that when you realize one simple thing – and that is that everything around us that we call life was made up by people no smarter than you!! And you can build your own things, you can build your own life that OTHER people can live in.
So BUILD a life, don’t live one, build one – find your opportunities and always be sexy.”
So, sexy at 50? You bet. Be smart, be thoughtful, be generous and just as important, be significant.
The Second Half is underway. Next stop on this journey, 100.
Until next time, thanks for taking the time
