An Hour with Aaron (Sorkin): It’s Just About… Life

I don’t think it’s too much to ask and if I wasn’t so moved, I wouldn’t. But when you can feel it like I do, I figure what the heck. Besides, if you desire to be at the top of your craft, or any endeavour for that matter, then you should seek out those who do it the best.

I want one hour with Aaron Sorkin – a 60 minute conversation to learn how he does it and what he would recommend for me. I am currently a huge fan of The Newsroom on HBO and not because I worked in TV news for 15 years, but because it’s all about the writing – the writing – the writing – and Sorkin’s amazing ability to do it in a way that leaves me in awe. I’m enamored with how he does it. The dialogue, so rich, with the perfect mix of drama and humor. The monologues, steeped in history and personal conviction. The multiple story lines, fascinating and fulfilling, it all stirs something in me which I can’t shake.

Is it self-serving? Maybe. But I also believe anyone who is passionate about something should yearn to learn from those who are the best in their field. And how can it hurt to ask? This blog, It’s Just About… Life & The Sunday Series, reaches all around the globe, I know because I can see the analytics. Then again technically so does any piece of information on the worldwide web. It can be a tremendous blessing, or a curse, it all depends on the purpose.

I could make a You Tube video asking for the sit-down, I could do something silly and hope it goes viral, or I could take the high-road and see if there’s a way for a connection who has a connection, who has a connection, who has a connection… you get the point. An e-mail, a letter, maybe… then again who is to say it actually goes to the right person. I figure maybe a 500 word blog, with the right tone and a pointed request might do more than anything else to get a response.

All criticisms of the man aside, and there are plenty of critics to go around, as there always are when you are at the top in your field. (Want to prove how successful you are, see how many people have something negative to say about you – just ask Taylor Swift and the “haters”.) I’m focusing on the craft and how it is developed and how Sorkin managed to get where he is today – it doesn’t even mean I want to write a TV show, I just want to write in a way where someone else can feel it deep in their soul – deep enough to sit down one morning and write a blog about it – and deep enough that maybe one day someone wants to ask me the same question – how do you do it?

An hour with Aaron, that’s all I ask. I’ll be waiting: markbrodinsky@gmail.com 🙂

Until next time, thanks for taking the time.
