Chasing Heroes: It’s Just About… Life

be-your-own-hero

It’s someone you look up to, someone for whom you have great respect, someone you admire and probably wonder how can that person do what they do?

That person is your hero. A parent, teacher, sports star, entertainer, best friend, philanthropist, the list goes on and on. But have you stopped to wonder: What if your hero wasn’t out there? What if your hero was inside you?

What if the hero you were looking for is the person you could be if you simply lived up to your potential? It’s something to stop and consider.

Is your hero inside you?

Academy-Award winning Actor Matthew McConaughey tells the story that at age 15 someone important in his life came up to him to ask if he was a hero. McConaughey told the person, “no, my hero is me, 10 years from now at age 25.” When he reached 25 the same person came up to ask him again, are you your hero now? McConaughey told the person, “no, my hero is still 10 years down the road, at age 35.” At age 35 he was asked the same question. McConaughey said no he was still not his hero. He went on to say that every day, every week every year of his life his hero is always 10 years away. McConaughey said, “I’m never gonna be my hero. I’ll never attain that.  I know I’m not and that’s just fine with me because that keeps me with somebody to keep on chasing.”

So who are you chasing?

Darren Hardy the publisher of Success Magazine says there is a slumbering hero which lies dormant inside us all. He says “You are capable of great heroism. Every awe-inspiring quality you’ve admired from a distance is within you. Your admiration is recognition – your greater inner self sees itself reflected in the attributes you admire in someone else. The greatest leader and hero you could ever come to know is the one YOU are capable of becoming. It is in you right now we just need to wake it up.”

In his book, Becoming the Perfect Networker, Ken Rochon talks about heroes, what he refers to as those who harness the Power of One.  People who themselves believed they had the power to at least try and chase the hero inside them. People like Mohandas Ghandi, Leornardo Da Vinci, Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Hellen Keller and maybe the world’s most recent hero, the late Steve Jobs.

“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently – they’re not fond of rules. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only think you can’t do is ignore them because they change things. They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.” – Steve Jobs

So instead of always looking out there, look in here, inside you, what you admire in someone else, is also inside you, you just need to find a way to wake it up, bring it to the surface, chase your hero and change the world.

Until next time, thanks for taking the time
