“Hold up, I’ll get to it. I’m going to do it, I swear, I’ll start tomorrow.”
They call it procrastination. Even better, they call it Resistance. Maybe the one thing that is guaranteed to kill your dreams.
Right now I am reading the War of Art, by Steven Pressfield. Sometimes it’s the little book no one tells you about, the one that’s NOT the best-seller that you hear about from only one person, but someone who you think is doing big things, so you listen. It’s always best to engage in conversation or heed the advice of someone smarter than you, and who has been where you want to go.
I heard about this book from a one-to-one interview I listened to with Marie Forleo. When asked about her favorite book, she said The War of Art. I figured I love art, lord knows I love to write, but what could a book about winning your creative battles truly teach me about life? Yet this is exactly why we never assume. This book is one of the most simple, yet profound I have ever read. Every page makes sense, ever paragraph makes you think. You realize you are in a war, every single day. A war against resistance.
Consider this passage:
Procrastination is the most common manifestation of Resistance because it’s the easiest to rationalize. We don’t tell ourselves “I’m never going to write my symphony.” Instead we say “I’m going to write my symphony; I’m just going to start tomorrow.”
The most pernicious act of procrastination is that it can become a habit. We don’t just put off our lives today; we put them off til our deathbed. Never forget: This very moment we can change our lives. There never was a moment and never will be, when we are without the power to alter our destiny. This second we can turn the tables on Resistance. This second, we can sit down and do our work.”
Do your work – now – like I am by writing, by writing this blog. Figure out your why, your gift and just do it. Why not? Maybe because Resistance has got the best of you.
Let’s end with this – because if you don’t think reading has the power to change your life, then I truly believe you are missing out on one of the greatest joys of life, and the power to create grand ideas, vision and deep inspiration. Go ahead, keep procrastinating. Keep resisting. It’s all good fun to rob us all blind by keeping the best within you bottled up inside.
Read this next passage then figure out why you’re NOT looking forward to your day, why you just want to get home, why you want to simply start the weekend, to be distracted by anything and everything you can get your hands on, listen to, watch or engage in which has nothing to do with what you are about, but everything to do with nothing truly important.
How about instead you reflect on this…
“Look in your own heart. Unless I’m crazy, right now a still small voice is piping up, telling you as it has ten thousand times, the calling that is yours and yours alone. You know it. No one has to tell you. And unless I’m crazy, you’re no closer to taking action on it than you were yesterday or will be tomorrow. You think Resistance isn’t real? Resistance will bury you.”
Don’t die with your true self lost inside you. Refuse Resistance. Battle back, fight to the death. Get to work. Live your dream. Fulfill your potential. Do the hard work of becoming better so everyone around you can reap the rewards. Provide the light we all desire to see emanate from within you. You don’t get the life you want, you get the life you deserve.
Do everything you can, with everything you’ve got, in every moment you live.
Until next time, thanks for taking the time.
