There was certainly something about the view the other night.
Standing up on top of Federal Hill in Baltimore, during my Daddy-Daughter date with Emily, we could see so much of the Downtown, down below. It was a perfect night, watching the colors change near sundown and thinking about just how much has changed, and is still changing every day in our lives.
No more so then for Emily, my baby girl, for whom “change” has become the six-letter word which defines her recent past and defines today. She has blossomed this summer, turning 14 and now turning another corner, away from being just a little girl and today heading off to her first official day of High School.
It’s crazy to look at her and to still see the crying infant I had trouble feeding in the middle of the night. She now walks and talks and carries herself like a young lady, though with the devilish smile and eyes that remind you of the little girl lurking inside. Today she begins the final run toward independence, what we expect will be four years of fun, academics, sports and whatever else she decides to take part in before the time comes for college, and venturing out on her own.
Standing there, up high on the hill with Emily reminded me of just how far she’s come, how far we all have come. Looking down below, with the colors in the sky and the remainder of light fading behind the tall buildings, you had to take a moment to appreciate life and all that it can be, as well as the moments you want to hold on to but that time won’t allow, because time waits for no one.
I just wanted to thank Emily for being the person she is. She was so accommodating that night, heading down to the Baltimore harbor on a whim, playing DJ with her iPhone on the way down, finding a restaurant to enjoy with hardly a search and agreeing to climb to the top of Federal Hill with nary a complaint, to take-in the view of the city down below.
We didn’t even appreciate the hour, or the setting sun until we reached the top of the hill and took in the view below. It was inspiring. Standing there it was easy to think about the beauty of life and how cool it was to share that scene with Emily – someone I love so much, someone I helped create, someone who every day I see her embodies the beauty of that view and purpose of life – one you can appreciate even more, up high.
Until next time thanks for taking the time,
Mark
