I offer good prices.
I offer the best customer service.
I’m reliable.
I’m trustworthy.
I know my stuff.
I help my clients.
I’ve been doing this a long time.
I’m a master of my craft.
I’m sure you are…but you mean to tell me that’s all you got?! WTF?
You can probably find thousands, if not millions of business people who can tell you all the reasons to do business with them, and they may all be legitimate. In fact there are people I’m sure who may fit every one of the attributes in the list above – but in the end, it’s shallow, it’s hollow, it’s redundant, it’s boring, it’s all better left unsaid.
For one thing we really don’t care.
Want to know why?
Because YOU HAVE YET TO SHARE YOUR WHY.
You’ve heard the saying people don’t care what you know until they know that you care. That’s true. But it’s a cliché’ and cliché’s are a dime-a-dozen (just like that saying).
What’s your why? Wanna know how to share it, wanna know how to show people you care, wanna know how to make them care, wanna evoke emotion, heart, passion and turn your business into a profit-magnet?
Then tell your friggin’ story already!! Why this doesn’t resonate with every single business owner in America – I have no idea. Why wouldn’t you?
Oh, I know…. fear. False Evidence Appearing Real. Fear that if you told us we wouldn’t like you, we wouldn’t understand you and some of us might think you’re weak, or vulnerable, or your reasons for doing this business just flat-out suck. I doubt that very much.
These are all reasons you made up in your head.
The truth? Guess what, most people will love and respect you for telling your story, they’ll be attracted to you and your business – WHY? – because they are yearning to do the same, they are tired of living a facade, they want to reveal their own truth, but they too are afraid. We walk around through life pretending to be something we’re not, so others will like us. Just say the right thing, pitch your business the right way, don’t color outside the lines of commerce or marketing, don’t break the rules. If it worked for Jack, it will work for Jill. Just toe the line, stay the course, and build your business of mediocrity for the world to NOT marvel at you.
Every great and memorable company had a great story to tell. Get that through your head or get out-of-the-way for the next big thing, which won’t be you or your business.
Don’t believe, consider this from a recent interview on YouTube with Professor Mihir Desai, a professor of finance at the Harvard Business School – he’s an ECONOMIST. All facts and figures, yet this is what he believes business needs the most: STORIES.
Stories help people understand the world. If you don’t tell stories people are not going to understand you. Stories anchor everything. You need a narrative do define your life, so tell your story. People remember stories. Stories are everything.
Want to be the best in the business – and in your business? Tell your story. I’m your vessel, I’m your guide, use me. I’ve got this story thing down to an art. It’s up to you to buy in. Put your marketing money where your mouth and your heart are… and get to work on selling us on YOU. Facts tell, stories sell.
Don’t leave all you got on the table, or worse, trapped inside. Be productive, be profitable, be a pro.
