Storytelling for Business: Why?

For hundreds of thousands of years we have defined our lives by the stories we tell. Don’t believe it? Pick up the world’s #1 book, something called The Bible.

There is nothing more powerful to attract, touch, reach or cojole another human being into paying attention to what you have to say, then to tell your story. We love stories. They say stories sell. So why wouldn’t your business invest in sharing yours, why wouldn’t we collaborate to share your message, build your brand and grow your bank account?

On my other outlet, (http://markbrodinsky.com/), I tell stories every week in something called The Sunday Series. These are personal stories of courage, hope and inspiration. The people in these stories who reveal themselves – by sharing their challenges, heartaches and triumphs – are vibrating at an incredibly high frequency, even if they don’t realize it in the moment.  We then feel that vibration. Minds are opened, hearts are touched, lives are changed – all because one person desired to share their most personal gift – their story. The person who has the courage to tell their story affects lives all over the world, it defines the law of attraction, because what you put out there comes back to you – and by doing so the person changes their own life, forever.

Your business is bound up in its own human-ness. It is a living, breathing thing. It has a story. A story, which if you share, empowers that same law of attraction. Plenty of businesses can tell us what they do, or how they do it, few can tell us why. That’s your story.

Case in point: I just became the world’s biggest Nike fan. Why? Because I am nearly finished reading Phil Knight’s book, Shoe Dog, A Memoir by the Creator of Nike.  It’s fascinating, it’s heartbreaking, it’s hilarious, it’s inspiring. Most importantly it changes my perspective because it makes me not only respect the struggle of one of the greatest iconic brands on the planet, but it makes me respect the man and the rag-tag team it took to build it. His story touches the deep recesses of my heart, because even though I know the outcome will be triumphant, I never knew the struggle, the heartache, the hundreds of moments of teetering, literally, on the precipice of the abyss.

All because of a dream.

There are dozens of prominent shoe companies out there. Each one is just a little bit different then the next. Each has its own style, each shoe can bring us a different benefit. But right now, in this moment, only one has captured my heart and eventually my wallet, because I love its story.

I’ll say it again. I just became the world’s biggest Nike fan. Stories win, every time.
