Storytelling for Business: Your New Life

“We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.” – Joseph Campbell, American Professor

I’ve written many stories for the company USHEALTH Advisors, the one to which I hitched my star more than four years ago, but this time, it’s personal.

It’s personal because I want you, the reader, to know that this is the opportunity for which you have been searching. But I have to ask you and more importantly, you have to ask yourself one simple question: what are you waiting for?

The days are long, but life is short.

As we all know life happens, it happens in good ways and in bad, no one is immune. So the question begs, how are you going to live the life you know you deserve, the one you are dreaming about, or have dreamt about for years now? The one you know in your heart-of-hearts is your destiny, but you’ve just been too afraid to take the risk, so the rewards lay dormant, something you might never see, touch or experience.

Who among those reading this is looking for a second chance? I was.

Who among those reading this is looking for a life of freedom and flexibility? I was.

Who among those reading this have longed to feel valued, appreciated and then paid what you are worth? I was.

And who believes that if you give back, in a way few have ever done or experienced, then what you get back will be more than you can ever imagine.

I do, now.

Look, I could write about the USHEALTH Advisors culture, the financial rewards, the incredible leadership, the constant support, the ability to learn, to earn and to feel valued in a way that few might ever know. It’s all true. Whoever thought that living a mission of HOPE, Helping Other People Everyday, could be so soulfully and financially rewarding? But until you live it, it all sounds like something out of reach, or maybe something impossible, or you’re so skeptical you don’t believe that anything like this might bring the life-changing opportunity you are looking for.

Yet it does. I know it because I’m living it. I’m no different than you, except for one thing, I work here with USHA and I experience all of this. It’s a career, it’s a lifestyle and it could literally change your life as it has done for countless others.

I’m proud and excited to announce that as of this week, I have been promoted to work as a Satellite Division Leader for our brand new Montgomery County, Maryland office and helping to grow the existing office in Sterling, Virginia. We still maintain a great office in Owings Mills, Maryland as well.

So why write about this? Because stories are what connect all of us. And because I know many of you reading this, who are not part of this company, are looking for a change, a new life. As the quote at the beginning of this story implores, “We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the life that is waiting for us.”

My new role, my focus, is to recruit, train, motivate… and as my personal mission, which I will share with you at the end of this story dictates… inspire.

The only way you can ever truly move toward the life you want is when you take control. You are 100% responsible for the life you are leading. Everything you’ve thought, believed and acted upon has led you to this place in life, to the moment you are living now. The question is, are you where you want to be?

If not, we should be talking about a career with USHEALTH Advisors, especially if you are looking for a second chance in life. This is a company of second chances, and everyone deserves that opportunity.

For years I worked in TV, as a producer and a reporter. While it sounds glamorous, (heck I even won an Emmy), and was a grand adventure, it got to the point it was draining the life out of me, because I could see the long hours I was working, the limitations I had in my free time and the future, which would consist of more of the same. It was not going to serve me or my family. Plus, I could see the writing on the wall – with a one-year-old daughter at the time, and the inflexible schedule I had, I knew I was going to miss her growing up. On top of it all, I was barely being paid what I was worth… and I knew it.

See, it doesn’t matter who you work for, they own you. They are in control and they make the rules because you are working for them. Just because television seemed to be a “really cool gig”, and it was, the rules of the game still apply. Other people control your hours, other people tell you when to work, other people  tell you what days you can take off, other people decide how much vacation time you can have, other people dictate what you’re worth, and that pay raise you’re dying for and can only hope happens, when it finally materializes, other people, including Uncle Sam, already have their hands in your pocket.

After 15 years I had enough of other people. I looked for an opportunity to make the rules, to take control of my life and to earn and get paid what I’m worth. Nearly twenty years later I am right where I belong and have been for some time now, with USHEATLH Advisors. I am paid very well because I decide what I’m worth, it’s life-changing and life-affirming. I feel valued and appreciated. I get to be part of a team and help and see others succeed. I do control my time, including my time off, which I get to take when I want. I get to give back and explore my other passions. No one is telling me what to do, they are guiding me and they are allowing me to be who I am, and do it in the service of others.

So my question is, does any of my story resonate with yours? See it’s not just about the money, it’s never really about the money, when you focus on the dollars you lose, when you focus on the dedication you have to help others and put them in a better situation, everyone wins. True wealth encompasses all of that and gives you the ability to take control of your time and your life.

You’ve got this one life. And from what I hear, what I listen to, what I read, most people go to jobs they hate every day, either because they feel trapped, (or believe they are), they need the benefits, (or think they do), or they have refused to even consider there was anything else.

I’m here to tell you there is something else. If you just look outside your current situation, if you simply believe in more, if you become aware, then you’ve got a second shot.

I’m here to offer you that second shot: for you, the employee wanting to change, looking for a second chance. For the unemployed, the ones with too many skills, and too few worthwhile jobs. For the person who is woefully underpaid. For the college graduate who went to school for the major they don’t like, the one for which they can’t find a “good-paying” job –  this could be your first, best opportunity and maybe the only one you will ever need.

As I mentioned, I have a brand new office opening in Montgomery County, Maryland and helping to grow another, expanding office in Sterling, Virginia. For me, it’s a natural progression of life… work hard, show others the way and then expand the horizon to offer the same opportunity to those looking for one, needing a second chance, looking for a better life, a new life, looking to move from the one that isn’t working, to the one you have only imagined. Remember: “we must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.”

So what are you waiting for?

What you’re waiting for, I hope, is simply an invitation. It’s been said that it’s an invitation which leads to every great encounter in life. You could be my next great encounter, I and this company could be yours. I hire for attitude, train for skill. If you’ve got the right attitude, there is little you can’t accomplish.

So for those in search of a better opportunity, here’s what I’m looking for. I found it very recently in a speech by Johnny Depp, from a little-known, but a powerful movie called, The Professor. I’d post the movie clip right here, but there are two expletives in the one-minute scene and I’m not here to offend anyone. So let me simply quote the speech, given by Depp’s character, Richard, the professor. Richard has been given only a few months to live. Here now are the words the professor shares with his small group of students, who are looking for wisdom and inspiration from a man staring death in the face. And let’s face it, we are all doing the same, we just don’t know when:

“Listen, the world needs people like you. The world is literally dying for your kind. Embrace that responsibility and run with it. Get out there, earn your keep, give back. It’s not gonna be easy, it’s never gonna be easy. For most of it you will stand alone, but you’ve got to stand strong.

I beg you to not give in to mediocrity, like the other 98 percent of the world. Because you would be doing yourselves and the world a great disservice. You’re all too smart, you are too smart to let it go to waste. You’ve got one shot at this… one (*******) shot. Don’t let a moment of it slip by. Grab it, snatch it up, make it yours. Celebrate every moment, celebrate every (******) breath. I’m telling you… life, it’s a birdsong.”

So, what’s your song? What will it take to get the music playing? The one thing you don’t want to do is let the music of your life die inside you. And the only way to orchestrate your symphony is to get out there, to make it happen for you, NOT for someone else. This is your life. This is your dream. This is your one shot. Don’t give in to mediocrity, live the life you were meant to live.

Reach out to me and let me help you build it, with a wonderful opportunity, the chance for a new life.
