It’s what we all want – to be seen, to be heard and feel valued – three basic human needs. So what’s the best way to fulfill the need for you and your business, or nonprofit? It’s pretty simple – unpack your story and get ready to receive. Who out there doesn’t want to receive more customers, more profits, more donors, greater visibility?
There’s nothing quite like a great story to engage, attract and motivate others to take action. Give value, others respond. Are you in business to live on an island? No. You’re in business to attract boats to your shore. To get others to see the light of your service or product. There are those who posses a light so bright it not only lights their way, but shines for others as well. That’s the beauty (and profitability) of sharing your story.
Your business or nonprofit is a living, breathing entity. It needs oxygen to survive in the form of customers and donors. Want to breathe life into what it is you do to improve the lives of others in the marketplace, or with your charitable organization – then the best way, the only unique way, which cannot be replicated by anyone else, is to tell your story.
If you run a burger-and-fries joint, and you operate next to another restaurant doing the exact same thing – you know who wins the day and the majority of the business? It’s not the cheapest guy in town – it’s the one with the best story! Wanna take a bite out of the competition – then serve your burger with that special sauce. Give us your why, and in return we give you our hard-earned dollars. Everyone “feeds” off of a great story.
You can explain what you do and how you do it, but when you tell us why you do it, everyone wins. By explaining your purpose, your mission, by revealing yourself or the reason behind your business, or the heart of your nonprofit, you attract people to you with a sense of trust and sincerity. There’s a snowball effect. Society and the marketplace are always ready to embrace a great story. You want raving fans, not just compliant customers.
We sing and dance to music, we laugh and cry at movies – why – because they tell us great stories and they help us feel the creative spirit – it’s not in just some of us, it’s in all of us. You bring the most value when you can show the courage to be real and vulnerable. Others will love you and what you do if you just reveal yourself and be the truest version of you. It’s the purest form of attraction.
Everyone wants to feel valued and validated. By sharing your story you become open to the opportunities of attracting those who now “feel” what it is you do, not just see what you do on a cerebral level. Open their hearts and they’ll open their wallets. Money loves energy. A good story is electric – it’s energy turned up on high.
