It’s April Fool’s Day. A day for someone to make you feel small. What fun.
Yet maybe there is humor in that – or at least some reflection and inspiration – after all it’s the small parts of you which you’ve been fooling, or forgetting about for way too long.
I’ve learned this only over the past few years, and have come to this conclusion that I need to remember the little pieces of me I’ve somehow lost along the way. The very things which allowed me the freedom to think big, have been either tucked away, or I’ve been told it can’t be done, do something else, be someone else, conform, get in line, follow the herd.
Bullsh*t.
Remembering and reconnecting with the small parts of me that made me feel I could stand tall are what matter, because they are the purest pieces of my soul: my gifts, my talents, my destiny, my legacy. There’s the time when you are small you have no choice to think bigger then you are because you have no idea where you are going, but you have a vision, maybe more than one to be someone you dreamed you could be, as soon as you grow up.
Then you grow up. And somewhere along the way, for most of us, the dream is distracted by the masses and the multiple times you hear “you can’t, you shouldn’t, you won’t.”
Because those pieces are so small, those tiny thoughts, those slivers of your biggest and wildest desires, it’s hard to bring them back, to harness their power, to keep them afloat against the constant rising tide of discouragement and negativity. You hear time and time again, “No, it will never work. What’s the point? Who cares? You are wasting your time.”
So your dreams get subdued, even buried to the point they are just whispers of what once was hope and your bold vision to do something grand to change the world. Yet the world desperately needs more people who can change it. In his book, Drive, Daniel Pink says we all need to tap into our third and most important drive – “our deep-seated desire to direct our own lives, to extend and expand our abilities, and to fill our life with purpose.”
But how do you do that when the big world tells your former big dreams that they are not worth it – or you should wait until the time is right. When you’re older, when nothing is going wrong, when you retire, when the world is at peace.
Wrong. You know the right time? It’s called NOW. Time to re-awaken the little pieces of you which have lain dormant for much too long. Time to remember the parts of you which knew you could dream big, especially as you come to realize your true talents, those world-changing slivers of your soul which when combined let the world know you mean business.
And don’t get angry, or scared, or remorseful – just get busy, get joyful, get to work as you remember, re-tool, re-think, re-awaken and then re-engage with the parts of you which have been trapped deep inside, because clarity comes from engagement not thought.
Start small, collecting the parts of you which can literally change the trajectory of someone else’s life, and by doing so transform your own as well.
The sum of your parts is backwards, it’s the parts of your sum you’ve left behind which will make you whole and change the game for us all.
I’m with you, let’s go!
Until next time thanks for taking the time,
Mark
