“The inspiration I am getting is from my kids, they are doing great. They are busy, social and active and have amazing friends and it’s also from other people. That helps replace the sadness.” – Beth Flaks Fisher
The fighter is gone. But the fight goes on. The family, friends and the village of people touched by Daron Fisher, keep punching.
The Sunday Series (25): Keep Punching II
Eight months after his untimely passing, the pain still resonates, but the passion is stronger than ever to make a difference, to give back. Sometimes you throw a pebble in the water and make a wave.
Daron Fisher passed away last August from brain cancer, after a 3-year battle against the beast. In a few paragraphs the original Sunday Series post about Daron’s amazing story, but first an update.
Keep Punching, a non-profit organization was created while Daron was still alive, to raise money and raise awareness to hopefully one day provide the knock-out punch to brain cancer.
Next month, on May 31st, Keep Punching will hold its first ever 5-K event. (http://www.eliteracemanagement.com/keep-punching-5k/)
350 people have already signed up to participate and there is still more than one month to go. It’s all because the message and the mission resonate. The event will take place at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland with a 5-K and a one-mile walk, a band, food trucks and a festive atmosphere. It’s the way Daron would have wanted it, to celebrate life, not wallow in sadness. So inspired by his story, even the Baltimore County Sheriff’s Association is getting involved, with a golf tournament on October 11th to help raise funds for Keep Punching, they too want to “knock-out” brain cancer for good.
In fact people from all over the country have been reaching out to Beth Fisher and to Keep Punching when they learn about what the organization is trying to accomplish, including raising funds for devices to help fight and defeat brain cancer, devices insurance doesn’t cover. Beth has been touched and inspired by the response. You never know what can grow from just one seed. (http://keeppunching.org/)
I too have been touched and inspired by the Fisher family and so before I post Daron’s full story, I want to take a moment to say thanks.
The people who become part of this Sunday Series, many of whom I have never actually met, put their ultimate trust in me. They let me into their lives and pour their hearts out. They tell me their story and then trust in me to do the same with my heart, and write their story in a way which inspires others and share it all over the world on this blog. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly. Beth Fisher took her trust in me to a new level. When a magazine approached her about promoting the Keep Punching event and sharing Daron’s story, they asked her to write an article. She came to me instead and asked if I would allow the blog post I had written months before about Daron’s journey, to appear in the magazine. The article was just published in Mt Washington Life.
I so appreciate the synergy, the energy and the trust. The editors of the magazine were also kind enough to profile me as a Community Contributor for writing the story. I am honored.
Show a little love, you never know what you can change. This Sunday Series is part of my gift to others, to take my talent and ability and impact the world, one word at a time. I want you to be inspired by the heroism of those who are facing some of life’s toughest battles and still finding a way to thrive through this journey we call life. I hope it helps to put life in perspective for all of us.
And now, the re-post of Daron Fisher’s story: (https://markbrodinsky.com/2013/11/17/the-sunday-series-6-with-mark-brodinsky/)
Until next time, thanks for taking the time.
