The Sunday Series 3: It’s Just About… Life.

JodiHume-TimeStrategist-0013
This is the Sunday Series. YOUR stories, in which we all can share, learn, empathize, be inspired and become more. People who bravely face the tough challenges life throws in their path, people who lead the way, or people who live the life they were meant to live. Born to do it. I’ve found one.

The Sunday Series (3): The Business of Life

I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment’s gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind

Kansas, Lyrics from Dust in the Wind

Really? As Dorothy says in The Wizard of Oz, “Toto, I don’t think we’re into Kansas anymore.” Time to change that song, rewrite those lyrics, open your eyes and seize your dream before it passes. Jodi Hume can help.

Not only will Jodi help, she will help you see the why and the how, by helping you help yourself.

Some people just have it. I haven’t known Jodi very long, but I only needed to know her for about 30 seconds to see exactly who she is, what her innate talent is, because it’s apparent from the moment she says “hello”, it’s in her DNA. She has the ability to guide you to a better you. Jodi says there is something compelling about living a full life, not jam packed with activity, but realizing you are on this planet “to do what it is you can’t not do.” In other words, Jodi can help you realize your path, what you were meant to do, and then show you how the smallest change can help you merge onto the highway to a better you.

Jodi started doing this full time about eight years ago, and now runs her own business called The Business of Life, (http://inthebusinessoflife.com/). This is NOT a commercial for Jodi, this is a blog post about someone living the life she was meant to live, born with a gift she is using to help other people, or as Jodi describes it in her own words, “I’m absolutely hard-wired to do this, it was baked into me from the beginning.”
Jodi speaks

You want to talk to Jodi. And plenty of people do. Jodi has an incredible ability to listen, then to have people let their guard down, not because she is asking you to, but you can see it in her eyes, she is taking it all in, in a way you haven’t seen before. Jodi believes she makes it easy for people to talk about what they are feeling right at that moment, because she respects you for feeling what you are feeling and that makes a huge difference. Whether the person feels stuck where they are, embarrassed about their situation, or simply trying to figure out the how, since they already know their why.

“I think it’s what makes me different”, says Jodi. She jokes, “it’s my version of (The Sixth Sense) I see dead people, when people are talking to me my brain sorts out the things they are saying, I see diagrams in my head of what they are saying and separate the core truth from the story they have whipped around it. I am incredibly quick to getting to the nugget of what people need to focus on and what they need to ignore. One of my clients says I call you because no matter what it is, you can diagnose the root cause faster than I can tell the story.”

I’m here to tell you it’s a wonder to behold, because Jodi is completely in tune to her gift and in turn can help someone find the way to theirs.

It’s such a unique approach and a unique mix of true talent emanating from one human being. Jodi has an undergraduate degree in psychology, and a certificate as a skilled facilitator from Johns Hopkins. She markets herself as a time strategist/executive coach/facilitator and it’s a triple threat she brings from deep inside. Jodi is smart, with a heart. “One of my clients said I feel like you throw your whole heart into me, like you are swinging for me as a dear friend, but you also have this incredible logical business strategy.”

There’s a really cool thread running through all of this as well. Maybe the one thing people don’t realize they can gain control over, is the one thing Jodi is able to help them focus on… time. Take back the time, take back your time. Jodi says she loves helping a business run more efficiently by helping them utilize the time, or the person who has never bothered to spreadsheet the 168 hours of life they live every week. “You have the choice to design your life whatever way you like. You get to navigate your life to get what you want”, says Jodi.

Practice what you preach. Jodi says, “the one thing I want to make extremely clear, there isn’t one thing I get on the soapbox about that I don’t remind myself about daily. I have to consciously remind myself that I have a choice about what I do, or don’t do. When you say “yes” to something, you say “no” to something else. And you can’t feel guilty about it. Ask yourself, what do I need more of right now? It’s usually a pretty easy decision.”

As easy as helping the client who recently said he couldn’t leave work at 4:30 to go see his son play soccer, because he told Jodi he’s the owner of the business so how could he possibly leave early, it sets a bad example. Jodi said to him, that’s WHY you can leave early, because YOU own the business. The guilt was stopping the man from enjoying his family. But after talking to Jodi and making the decision to do it, he came back to her to explain how that one small change had dramatically changed the dynamic of his family’s life. The client had put his body where his mind and heart were. A simple adjustment, but a new alignment that changed his life. Jodi knows all about this, after all she has a family of her own and wants to be there to enrich their lives as well.

“I’m really intuitive, but I’m crazy logical”, says Jodi. “My heart listens to what you are up to, and how big it could be and how important it is, but then you turn to the part of, how do I make this work…” That’s where Jodi excels. Imagine laying out your dream to someone, and then having them show you how you can not only become the person to encompass that dream, show you how to find the time to make it happen, but also give you a roadmap to get there!

Then it’s no longer dust in the wind. It’s Jodi Hume helping direct your winds of change, the same winds that could change your life. Living the life you were born to live, just like Jodi.

Until next time, thanks for taking the time.

  1. Great piece Mark! Jodi is such a deserving person to have featured. I’ve had the privilege of working with Jodi during much of 2013, as I’ve built out my Talking GOOD program and interview series. You really captured her essence in this piece. Recently, I wanted to capture my experience working with Jodi in a short blurb … this is what I came up with:

“I’ve worked with numerous coaches and consultants who tout their patented systems for growth and success. The problem is, these one-size-fit-all approaches to business and life, while inspirational, lack utility and often fall well short of the mark. Jodi Hume doesn’t pretend to have everything figured out. She acknowledges and embraces the inherent messiness that life can throw at us, and helps clients develop strategies that are unique to their styles, circumstances, and tendencies. What’s more, Jodi’s doesn’t just coach from the sidelines. She dives into the fray with her clients … partnering with them, learning with them, and helping them to achieve the outcomes that may have once thought unattainable.”

    1. Great thought Rich. Inspired from the moment I met her. Mike Tich told me you need to meet Jodi. He was right
