This week I am taking a short pause in The Sunday Series to answer a question I have been asked lately, actually quite often. Why? Why do this?
From where I sit there is no reason to question why I do it. I want to write, to inspire and part of this is to tell other people’s stories. It is pure and it is simple, this is who I am. I’ve learned through trial and error and now through abundance, gratitude and the soulful realization of my intrinsic gifts, that this is part of my calling.
I am a writer and so part of being the vessel for the talents that God has bestowed upon me is to do just that – to write – and by doing so to tap into the hearts and minds of others – and allow them, through me, to share their stories so we all can learn, empathize, feel the courage, touch the hope and step into the infinite power of inspiration. This is the human experience and we are all in the game, and if we don’t believe we are, it’s time to re-evaluate our position and readjust our thinking because everyone has a story.
I write because I want to share and I share because I know it is the only way.
“Our job in this lifetime is not to shape ourselves into some ideal we imagine we ought to be, but to find out who we are already and become it.” – Steven Pressfield, The War of Art
Another passage by Steven Pressfield might answer the question of Why. It actually did for me the first time I read it less than 24 hours ago:
“Are you a born writer? Were you put on this earth to be a painter, a scientist, an apostle of peace? In the end the question can only be answered by action. Do it or don’t do it. It may help to think of it this way. If you were meant to cure cancer, or write a symphony or crack cold fusion and you don’t do it, you not only hurt yourself, even destroy yourself. You hurt your children. You hurt me. You hurt the planet. You shame the angels who watch over you and you spite the Almighty, who created you and only you with your unique gifts, for the sole purpose of nudging the human race one millimeter farther along its path. Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. It’s a gift to the world and every being in it. Don’t cheat us of your contributions. Give us what you’ve got.”
I’m trying. I’m honestly trying. I’m doing some of the work I was born to do. It’s in my heart and in my soul. When inspiration touches talent she gives birth to truth and beauty.
And with that in mind, The Sunday Series will continue next week.
Until next time, thanks for taking the time.
