If you want to continue to get better at anything in life you must adhere to one basic principle: practice.
Oh yeah, you also have to put in the work.
With that in mind, I begin the concept of Writing Wednesdays. No, this idea is not original, I am heeding the words of legendary artist Pablo Picasso who said, “lesser artists borrow, great artists steal”, and directly ripping-off an idea from another artist, writer and author Steven Pressfield. In his book Turning Pro, Pressfield talks about his practice of Writing Wednesdays, simply taking responsibility to commit to doing one thing he loved to do, write.
I love to write, so why wouldn’t I? There are more than 500 posts now on this blog including the signature piece, The Sunday Series, where each week I pour myself into the lives of other people and share their stories, stories of courage, hope and inspiration. But the blog began and has continued from time to time, with posts about information I glean from reading, listening and life experiences, hence the other side of this blog, It’s Just About… Life. Eventually the time will come, (in the not too distant future), to separate the two, but for now they’re taking up residence in a single nesting place, right here, where you and I are sharing the experience of the written word.
The entire idea here is to share. And on Writing Wednesdays we’ll keep it to about 500 words or less. Less is more. It doesn’t take a novel to impart one idea and sometimes one idea can change your life. Ideas tend to do that, since your brain is just waiting around for some new information to get your body to act and to move, hopefully in the direction of something productive, whether it’s personal or for someone else.
You might just pause for reflection, you might think, you might cry, you might laugh, you might think you wasted three minutes of your day. It’s all good. The point is I’m just filling some space on this giant orb on which we spin with something I’ve got inside of me, which I hope by releasing will make a tiny dent in the universe.
They’re only words – yet it’s been said words are power and can inspire the world.
So why not give it a shot? If anything that comes from my mind or my heart on this page and serves to inspire even one other person, than each blog is a success. So let me wrap this up with one other theft – stealing directly from the words of philosopher Jim Rohn – “the essence of life is growth, seeing all that you can do with all you have been given.” If you’ve got it, why not share it?
We only get one tango on this big dance floor of life. I only wish to do all that I’ve been given with the music and rhythm of my heart.
I hope each Wednesday you’ll want to dance with me.
Until next time thanks for taking the time,
Mark
