Writing Wednesdays: Who Are You?

writing-wednesdays

So who are you?

The answer might seem simple, but it’s actually more complicated. Because the question is, are you being the real you, meaning your true self?

It might be the hardest thing you ever have to do. There’s the you your parents think you should be, there’s the you your relatives and family think you should be, there’s the you your friends think you should be and then there’s the you your community, or society in general thinks you should be, (the herd).

That’s a lot of people thinking or saying or commenting on who you should be. There’s a lot of noise out there and sometimes it’s seemingly impossible to drown it out or turn it off, or pull yourself away from being distracted by all the distractions which are keeping you from being your true self.

It all starts with why and your purpose. It’s pointless if you haven’t given it any thought, or enough thought to move you even one small step forward. Eleanor Roosevelt once said too many of us tiptoe our way through our lives just to get safely to death. It’s scary out there trying to be who you truly are, who you were meant to be.  Yet everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.

So don’t just take it from me. I recently listened to an interview with Tala Raassi, the uber-successful Iranian-American born fashion designer, (born in Maryland and raised in Tehran), who says you have to be very passionate about yourself and what you believe in. Tala says you have to believe it in your soul for yourself even when others refuse to believe it for you.  She says you have to invest in yourself even when others won’t. Tala should know, in 2012, she was named “One of the Most Fearless Women in World” by Newsweek Magazine.

Steve Jobs said it this way: “Your time is limited, so don’t use it living someone else’s life, trapped by dogma which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other people’s opinion drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become.”

Then there’s Jen Sincero in her book Badass, (a book I refer to again and again because it’s just that good). Jen believes this: “Growth ain’t for weenies, but it’s nowhere near as painful as living the life you’re living right now if you’re not really going for it. If you want to take control of your life and turn it into something spectacularly “you”, then stop at nothing. Have faith. Whatever happens, stay the course, because there’s nothing cooler than watching your entire reality shift into one that is the perfect expression of you.”

So who are you? Give it some thought today then take that first brave step into perhaps discovering a whole new world.

Until next time thanks for taking the time,

Mark
