Mom: It’s Just About… Life.

The one.

The blog posts this week (Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday), will focus on the person who perhaps holds the world’s most important job. It’s not the President, not the King, not the quarterback of your favorite football team, not the guy who created the iPhone and not the founder of Facebook. Besides they’re all guys and you probably would agree they don’t hold a candle to the person who, for at least a brief moment, and hopefully many, many more, wielded the greatest power over your existence, your Mom.

Mother’s Day is this Sunday and although you get a day to think about it, I think you might agree it’s worth more than 24 hours of contemplation and celebration.

I’ve got one, a good one. My Mom is caring, loving, nurturing and fortunately for my family, still around. I got a good head start in life because of her and I, as do so many of us, owe her a debt of gratitude. Motherhood can be the world’s most rewarding and most thankless job all at the same time. Being a Mom means sacrifice, it means opening up your heart so wide, so vulnerable, filled with love, worry, hurt, joy and laughter that a Mom’s center muscle might just be the strongest of them all. To be a Mom that heart needs to have a tough skin and at the same time be completely porous and transparent. To be a Mom means you give completely, sometimes unrecognized, sometimes void of gratitude, but give nonetheless because you already gave so much of yourself, your own flesh and blood, you can’t help but love, teach, and nurture until it hurts.

And sometimes it does hurt, because to get it right you’ve got to reprimand your own, get tough, fight back and then turn on a dime…to be tender, thankful and loving. Find another who can juggle these emotions, one who has a heart that can handle the twists and turns, a heart that can take the beating and then start beating again, in awe, wonder and pride for those to whom they gave life. It’s no small feat, in fact it’s a feat at which the world marvels, for those of us who aren’t, it’s nearly impossible to comprehend, yet in most cases we witness it being accomplished with such subtle grace under pressure you don’t even realize it’s happening.

It just so happens we take a day each year to give thanks and gratitude to Mom, though there really aren’t enough days in our lifetime for this, for they gave us life, help us live it, and that’s why it’s just about… life.

Until next time, thanks for taking the time.
Mark
