It’s easy to do and you hear it, (and sometimes feel it), everyday: “I’m overwhelmed”.
I’ve heard people say this at least a dozen times in the past few weeks, and felt it myself. It might be the most common of all instinctive human traits to feel there is too much to do and not enough time to do it. And it’s not a positive word to think about or even to say out loud; consider the definition:
Simple Definition of overwhelm
-
: to affect (someone) very strongly
-
: to cause (someone) to have too many things to deal with
- : to defeat (someone or something) completely
The dictionary doesn’t paint a pretty picture of what it means, nor does it feel good. So why do we let ourselves get that way? That’s right – we let ourselves get that way, it doesn’t happen to us, we allow it to happen. And I’m not saying I’m not guilty. We all are.
Put it off, work around it, do the easy thing first instead of the hard thing, don’t make a plan. What’s easy to do is easy not to do. It’s also easy to take on too much because we believe we can do it all, when all we are doing is taking on too much, more than we are capable of handling at any given time because time always has the upper hand.
Many say it comes down to simple time management. It’s kind of funny when you think about it for two reasons: for one thing time is finite, especially the 24 hours of any given day, you can’t make more of it. And secondly, it is completely out of our control and that makes us afraid. Fear rules the day if you let it.
It’s not time management, it’s ME management. It’s about managing your mind, your schedule, your emotions and thoughts. Think big, act small. Every problem, every challenge, everything you are going through is easier to deal with when tackled in little bits and pieces. The smallest of actions, done consistently over time creates big energy. #thecompoundeffect.
I also believe it’s about what you feed your mind. There’s no doubt about it. If other people talked to us the way we talk to ourselves we’d slap them in the face, we would hate them, feel lost, alone, defeated…even overwhelmed. Yet we do it to ourselves in the conversations we have in our minds each and every day. It’s what we say when we talk to ourselves. It’s easy to let fear and a lack of control permeate our consciousness, especially since we are all going through something.
Everybody is going through something. Never forget that. If you’re living life, something is happening. It just depends on the intensity of that “something”. If you let it, it can overwhelm you. And maybe that’s just it, whatever you are feeling, whatever you are going through is either at the foundation of this feeling, or sitting on top of the pile of stuff you’ve got to do weighing it down.
Which is why you take it “small”, to go big. It’s why I believe you must feed your mind with pictures (sayings) and words (books) and sounds (CD’s, podcasts, music), VIDEOS that make you want to take on this one life you’ve got and make something happen, by making yourself happen, by believing in you, because if you don’t no one else will either. You know why? Because other people are also worried about believing in themselves and about tackling what they are going through. Don’t think for even one minute that other people are thinking about you all the time, in fact, most of the time they are not, they are worried about their own self-preservation. And they should be, because being all you can be, staying mindful, trying to reach your potential is hard and sometimes tedious work. To put yourself in a position to help others you must first help yourself.
One of the great joys of life is honestly taking on the challenges that you face and finding a way to overcome, stop from feeling overwhelmed, and just go through it, not around it. Easy to do, easy not to do. But possible, doable, and completely in your control. Your mind could care less what you put into it, it will go in whatever direction you point it.
What you think about and focus on expands. The goal then is to not get overwhelmed, but to get through. Not to go around, but to go headfirst. Learn, love, serve, care…live. You and I have only got one shot at this life.
The time is now, before it’s over and out.
Until next time thanks for taking the time,
Mark
