The Moments In Between: It’s Just About… Life.

It’s where most of life is lived. The moments in between. The times in between what we decide are the big events, the big milestones in life, the “big times” everyone recognizes as momentous occasions… birthdays, graduations, weddings, vacations, funerals. The good and the not-so-good “big” moments.

Yet most of our lives are lived in between. The big events might be a day, maybe a week, the memories of those days might last a lifetime, but the days we are actually living in between these times take up most of the space of our lives.

So why not recognize it.

It’s as simple as taking a few seconds to look at the sunrise, sunset, glance at a star in the night sky. Or to simply pay attention to the people and places around you and the activities you are doing, which might seem mundane, but hold within them significant meaning, because every moment, if you choose to focus, can be important.

For the past few weeks we have been running my daughter Sophie back and forth and back and forth and back and forth to her rehearsal for the first big play she is to be a part of called “Seussical the Musical”, a Pumpkin Theatre production. Almost every night and every day it’s a ride to the location, a ride back home, a ride up, a ride back. The weeknight rehearsals don’t end until 9:30pm, so there’s no time to get settled in for the night, because it’s back into the cold night air for the dark drive to pick her up and bring her home and then bedtime at 10pm, or later.

That’s one way to view the details. The other is this. It might just be the best part of the day. I don’t mind the ride at all because as Sophie hops in the car following her rehearsal she is immediately ready to share, without prompting, the events of her evening. She is simply loving every minute of it. It makes her happy and my teenage daughter, who like any teen, isn’t always in the mood to converse, sometimes because the wind went from east to west, can’t stop talking. These car rides, late in the evening after a long day, she is all about letting it flow, excited, laughing and enjoying the moments.

There will be a big show soon, in fact several big shows as the play is performed in front of a number of large audiences starting this weekend. I have no doubt it will be a big success and the kids will do a great job. Those will be big moments for we parents and the children alike.

But what I will remember most are the moments in between. Because the few minutes each day I get to watch my daughter share and talk about what lifts up her heart and soul, doing something she truly loves and cares about, are the times I don’t want to forget, because those moments are fleeting. Every day she grows up, as do I. Time moves way faster than the heart wants and it never stops. So I will enjoy the show, relish in Sophie’s joy and accomplishments up on the stage…and I will forever remember the moments in between.

Me and Sophie

Until next time, thanks for taking the time.

  1. “Time moves way faster than the heart wants,” -never heard it said that way before, but it is so true & so profound. I, too, love those ‘one on one’ times with each of my grandchildren. Also, looking forward to seeing your teenager in her debut in a few.

  2. Beautifully written!

  3. How true!

  4. Said so well. Remember all the moments in between, they are priceless.

  5. As usual, Mark, so very well written and true. It is those fleeting moments in time that will
always be as special as those “bigger” moments which stay in our hearts. Our granddaughter,
    a star, wow, and wow!
